SHELLEY
ROSENSTEIN

Shelley Rosenstein is a Chicago based artist who received her undergraduate degree in Visual Art and Art Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her Masters degree in Teacher Leadership from the University of Illinois.
In a teaching career spanning 20+ years, Rosenstein taught Visual Arts to elementary school students in the Chicago Public Schools, Evanston-Skokie District 65 and Francis W. Parker School, Chicago IL. Additionally, she created a model internship program for high school students fostering preparation for college and employment skills. Rosenstein retired from teaching in 2013. Rosenstein was also on the staff of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago from 1974-77 and served in a variety of educational and administrative capacities on the MCA Women’s Board for 18 years.
Rosenstein’s love of ceramics began at the University of Wisconsin with noted ceramic artist Don Reitz as her first instructor. Reitz’s dynamic personality and motivational energy inspired Rosenstein to pursue a lifelong study of ceramics, including a year in London at the Cass College of Art.
Rosenstein continued her ceramic activities in a variety of studios and art centers, taking workshops at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass, CO and pursuing ceramics, and botanical illustration, painting and drawing at Lillstreet Art Center in Chicago. During these years, Rosenstein also amassed a serious collection of 20th C. and contemporary American ceramics and travelled extensively, visiting artists’ studios and museum collections in North America and Europe.
Rosenstein’s current work combines her interest in creating graceful porcelain forms with a passion for painting fanciful botanical specimens. Rosenstein’s inspirations come from her deep art history background and decades of studying paintings, drawings, textile designs, prints, photography and the history of ceramics.
